23rd-29th June 2024, Stockholm (SE): MOSAIC was present at the 26th world congress of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO). Our colleagues Andrey Krasovskiy, Florian Kraxner, and Shelby Corning moderated the oral and poster sessions on “Forest fires in mountain regions,” a highly relevant topic for MOSAIC and in which several project partners presented results or work related to the project. Informal meetings were held with MOSAIC project partners to discuss ongoing progress, results, and collaborative efforts. Poster presentations by Silvia Novelli and Giulia Mantero. In particular, Giulia Mantero presented a poster regarding the results of different restoration scenarios in the Bourra pilot site (Verrayes, AO, IT) obtained through a machine learning correlative model (Bayesian Additive Regression Tree, BART). Our colleagues from the CERC-WSL convened the conference session “T1.15 Impacts of Global Change on Protective Forests in Mountain Areas”, IUFRO World Congress 2024. This session focused on recent advances in research to improve our understanding of the effects from the various implications global change has on protective forests. The selected were explicitly addressing impacts of global change on protective services of mountain forests, contributing to our understanding of how rising temperatures, increasing forest disturbance frequencies and intensities, and socio-economic changes affect the ecosystem service “protection against alpine natural hazards”.
