On the basis of the desktop survey the BB-CLEAN partnership collected several policy solutions and identified additional challenges & solutions in interviews and virtual discussion rooms with experts coming from all the Countries involved in the BB-CLEAN Project.
Based on the participated search five MACRO-SCENARIOS have been defined related not only to the implementation of technological innovation with respect to the state of the art but even related to economic incentives (that could foster the implementation of heat storage systems, a natural gas or a district heating grid when feasible), informative tools (i.e. the actual use of the BB-CLEAN WEB APP developed in the framework of the project by a realistic percentage of population) or awareness raising campaigns to foster a correct combustion in small scale appliances as well as the use of a higher quality fuel.

The FIVE MACRO-SCENARIOS are:
SCENARIO N.1: Emissions reduction
1) substitution of old and inefficient small scale appliances with new and efficient ones;
2) the application of primary measures for pollution abatement due to biomass burning (regular cleaning of the chimneys, better combustion due to better fuel quality and/or better use of the small-scale appliance by the end user);
3) the application of secondary measures for pollution abatement due to biomass burning (electrostatic precipitators in old or new appliances or alternative systems for PM emissions abatement in particular).
All small-scale biomass appliances are converted to natural gas boilers.
SCENARIO N. 3
Small-scale biomass appliances are replaced by a centralized biomass district heating plant.
SCENARIO N. 4: Emissions reduction due to the use of the BB-CLEAN web app
The emissions due to biomass burning when the traffic light index will show the “red” colour will be shifted to different hours of the day when the traffic light index will show the “yellow or green” colours.
Re-modulation of the “timing” of emissions due to small scale biomass combustion plants; For instance, the installation of heat storage systems could foresee both a different timing and different load cycles of the small combustion appliances with respect to the state of the art.
In the round table we will discuss THE SOLUTIONS EMERGED FROM THE SIMULATIONS of the modelling scenarios and DEVELOP THE NEW POLICIES PROPOSALS for clean biomass burning. Attached is the Agenda of the event.
