I-SWAMP’s restoration efforts are continuing through the winter season across various sites in Austria and Slovenia.
On January 12th 2024 the Geopark Karavanke/Karawanken, in collaboration with E.C.O., organized a community-driven activity day in Sittersdorf (Austria) focused on the ecological restoration of Sonnegger Moor. The event saw the active participation of several volunteers from the local community, including the town’s mayor, who collectively engaged in removing overgrown shrubs. This proactive step is crucial in mitigating the overgrowth that poses a significant threat to the wetland habitat’s.
This recent intervention builds upon the efforts undertaken during the spring and summer of 2023, which involved the removal of substantial quantities of the invasive North American plant, Solidago gigantea (tall goldenrod).
Further restoration activities are slated to take place in Austria and Slovenia before the project’s conclusion at the end of February.
