Partner: Eurac Research and Its Role in the ALPHA Project

Feb 27, 2025

Eurac Research is a private research center based in Bolzano, South Tyrol (Italy), bringing together experts from diverse scientific fields and international backgrounds. Our interdisciplinary approach fosters innovation and knowledge exchange across a broad spectrum of research areas.

Eurac Research operates through a dynamic ecosystem of Institutes and Centers, each contributing specialized expertise:

  • Institutes: Alpine Environment, Applied Linguistics, Biomedicine, Comparative Federalism, Earth Observation, Minority Rights, Mountain Emergency Medicine, Mummy Studies, Public Management, Regional Development, Renewable Energy
  • Centers: Advanced Studies, Autonomy Experience, Climate Change and Transformation, Global Mountain Safeguard Research, Migration and Diversity, Sensing Solutions, terraXcube, Research Across Institutes

With research in six distinct areas – Sustainable Heating & Cooling Systems, Photovoltaic Systems, Energy Efficient Buildings, Urban and Regional Energy Systems, Energy Retrofit of Historic buildings, Overall Energy System Modelling and E-Mobility – the Institute for Renewable Energy studies technologies that produce and manage energy at different scales: from power plants to their integration in buildings; and from the definition of the energy balance of individual buildings to energy plans for entire neighbourhoods or cities.

The Institute uses several methods in its research, including dynamic energy simulations, prototyping, measurements in the Institute laboratories and monitoring campaigns. The results of this research offer concrete support to companies that are developing innovative products and systems.

This service to companies, along with its extensive experience in the proposal and management of European research projects, make the Institute a reliable partner in research and development projects. The research spreads from South Tyrol throughout the world: the skills developed in Europe and overseas are brought to the region and become the basis for studies and projects at local and national levels in conjunction with local administrations.

The Institute for Renewable Energy is one of eleven institutes at the European Academy of Bolzano (Eurac Research), an interdisciplinary centre for future-oriented research. Eurac Research researchers develop strategies, technologies and solutions for the most relevant challenges of our time: the sustainable exploitation of natural resources, economic prosperity and population health. This research is inspired by the local environment, but opens itself up to a wider European and international dimension. The researchers collaborate with international organisations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Alpine Convention. In addition to its headquarters in Bolzano, Eurac Research has three representative offices in Brussels, Vienna and Rome. The eleven institutes are grouped into four thematic areas: Autonomies, Health, Mountains and Technologies.

Within the project, Eurac Research leads WP3 and contributes to the development of all jointly created tools, frameworks, and plans, leveraging its expertise in innovative heating and cooling (H&C) solutions and methodologies.

Building on its proficiency in ICT tools, Eurac is responsible for designing and managing the infrastructure of the online platform, supporting the planning and implementation of 5GDHC.

Additionally, Eurac will develop a masterplan for conducting local seminars, including a detailed specification of the transferability approach to ensure effective knowledge dissemination and adaptation.
