Report on existing monitoring platforms and potential data for the integration into ADO

The Regional report on existing drought monitoring platforms and potential data for the integration into ADO is based on the analysis of channelled reviews of drought monitoring approaches from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia.

The report includes an overview of existing indices by country, by drought type addressed, by type of calculation and type of projection. It collects drought monitoring approaches for early detection of drought conditions across the Alpine region. For the preparation of the future ADO platform it collects information about already existing drought monitoring platforms available to users at country and international level. The report reviews existing platforms and by doing this collects the requirements and examples of good practices for tools of early warning systems. Lastly it collects indices already in use in the Alpine area and recommends additional indices that could be used in the ADO platform.

Channelled review of drought monitoring approach

Monitoring different aspects of the drought cycle in the Alpine area may require a variety of indices, which will depict the drought conditions on the very diverse and inhomogeneous terrain of the region. Given the importance of the Alpine region for local and downstream water-related activities, there is a commitment of ADO project to provide information on different characteristics of the hydrological and meteorological variables triggering drought situations in the Alps.

With this purpose in mind the Slovenian Environmental Agency (ARSO) prepared a questionnaire for project partners and relevant stakeholders joined as observers from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia. With this they provided information regarding the indicators in use in their respective countries for monitoring and evaluating meteorological, hydrological, agricultural and other aspects of drought. In addition, information about existing drought-information platforms and the early warning systems that are already in place on regional or country level were gathered. Lastly the partners proposed indices for integration into the ADO platform supported by practical experience with their use on mountainous terrain.
